Local couple still insists the first date was not a disaster

Seven years after a rained-out picnic and one borrowed umbrella, the evidence suggests it went rather well.

It was never my umbrella. I found it in the hallway of the library and decided that if it rained, I would offer it to the first person who looked as unprepared as I felt. It rained. You looked very unprepared.

We walked the long way to the station and you told me about your grandmother's garden. I missed my train on purpose.

The apartment with the slanted floor

Our first place had a kitchen you could cross in two steps and a floor that rolled every dropped orange to the same corner. We called that corner the orchard.

Now

Most mornings you are up before me, reading with your feet on the radiator. I pretend to be asleep a little longer just to watch.

I missed my train on purpose, and I would miss every one after it.

Letters to the editor

Dear Maya,

Seven years is a long time to keep a borrowed umbrella. I still have it, by the way. It still leaks.

Thank you for every ordinary day. They are my favourite ones.

Always yours,
Jonah
